<BR>The pools and schedules have been announced for the third and fourth events in this year's IRB Sevens series, the AXA New Zealand International Sevens and the USA Sevens.

<BR>Wellington hosts New Zealand swept all before them in the first two events last year to lay the foundations for a sixth IRB Sevens title, but this season Fiji go into the Wellington event, on 3-4 February, at the top of the standings table and in fine form, having won one final and lost the other in the first two events of the season. England, meanwhile, top the pools on the strength of the results of the last six tournaments and face Australia, Scotland and Papua New Guinea in Pool A.

<BR>Fiji head pool B, where they will face France, Canada and Niue, while hosts New Zealand are seeded third and face a tough test in Samoa, Kenya and the Cook Islands in Pool C. Coach Gordon Tietjens faces one of his greatest challenges as he looks to rebuild the side after early season disappointment, and defend the overall IRB Sevens crown.

<BR>The seedings do not change for the USA showpiece at the state-of-the-art Home Depot Center in Los Angeles, but the 16 sides do; Uruguay, Mexico and a combined West Indies side replace Pacific islanders Niue, the Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea.

<BR>In Los Angeles England again top Pool A and face France, Kenya and hosts USA, while Pool B pits Scotland and Uruguay against fancied Fiji and Argentina, who will battle out a repeat of the George final, won by Waisale Serevi's Fiji.
<BR>
<BR>Pool C sees newcomers West Indies square up to a trio of Oceania heavyweights; New Zealand and Australia will resume their rivalry, and Tonga are never to be counted out in the Sevens game, and Pool D is again topped by South Africa, who face Samoa - so impressive in the first two events of the season - as well as Canada and last year's LA darlings Mexico.

<BR>Da quel che ho capito esiste una prima fascia di teste di serie con diritto di partecipazione (otto squadre che in pratica fanno corsa a sé: Ing, Fra, Nze, Aus, Sam, Fij, Saf ed Arg) ed una seconda fascia di wild card assegnate da ogni organizzatore o dall'Irb stessa su base geografica. Pertanto se nei tornei del Golfo c'erano molte squadre africane ed asiatiche, in quello di Wellington ce ne saranno molte del Sud Pacifico ed in quello di L.A. vedremo anche Messico ed Indie Occidentali (!). Quindi mi sa che l'Italia salterà anche i tornei del sudest asiatico (Hong Kong e Singapore) e che comparirà in campo solo in occasione delle ultime due tappe: Parigi e Londra.

Quando mancano quattro partite alla fine della prima giornata, il quadro delle qualficate ai quarti è già quasi delineato: passano Nuova Zelanda, Fiji, Inghilterra, Francia, Samoa ed Australia. In ballo per gli ultimi due posti Sud Africa, Argentina e Tonga, con gli isolani vincitori a sorpresa sui Pumas che ora saranno costretti a battere gli Springboks nell'incontro decisivo.
