So what of the Italians now? Under new guidance and with even less to lose than before, the Azzurri once again rock up to one of the home unions, and will once again register a marginal improvement in performance on last season.

The influence of Pierre Berbizier is clear in his selection; he has picked as many France-based players as possible, and has sought to mix experience with youth right throughout the team.

Thus it is that in the back three, the two inexperienced/young wings are held together by 29-year-old Cristian Stoica at fullback. In the back row, 4-cap Josh Sole flanks alongside Mauro Bergamasco and Sergio Parisse, and prop Carlos Nieto will have Fabio Ongaro and Salvatore Perugini looking after him in the boiler room.

It makes for a balanced and mature-looking selection, despite the protestations of Berbizier about the limitations of his squad, and with the France-based duo of Mirco Bergamasco and Gonzalo Canale pairing up in the centres, Italy has some real threat and pace out wide for the first time in a long time.

The Italians will score a couple of tries then - but when push comes to shove, as it will on a cold Dublin lunchtime, the Irish are simply too strong up front. Canale and Bergamasco can try what they like, but they won't get much ball to play with.

Ireland will win the game up front, and if they can win the game out wide early on as well, bookmakers will hastily be revising their odds on Ireland come Saturday afternoon.

One to watch:

For Ireland: See how David Wallace plays in his first meaningful Ireland match since 2002. The indefatigable Munster flanker, a favourite of the fans, has finally forced his way back into the mix after a magnificent performance in Munster's victory over Sale in the Heineken Cup.

For Italy: New Zealand-born Josh Sole is a promising flank from the Viadana club, who has been enhancing his reputation no end during the European Challenge Cup matches against Northampton, Bristol, and Narbonne. The 26-year-old is a real livewire on the ball and has the brains to match.

Head-to-head: Brian O'Driscoll v Gonzalo Canale: BOD displayed some of his best form yet against Bath, but Canale is an uncompromising centre from the Clermont club and is more than cocky enough to take the Irish captain down a peg or two. This will be an intriguing physical confrontation.

Prediction: Ireland by 15 points in a high-scoring match.
totalbet.com prediction: Ireland by 24 points
