<BR>Pau, currently bottom of the Top 14 table without a point, were within eight days of liquidation on Wednesday, until new President Joachim Alvarez and the other board members came up with a rescue package.

<BR> At a press conference on Wednesday, Alvarez announced the safety of the club for the time being.
<BR>
<BR>\"My initial reaction was discouragement,\" said Alvarez.
<BR>
<BR>\"I was close to calling it a day. But after having discussed the matter with staff in particular, I did not see myself leaving at the first sign of trouble.\"
<BR>
<BR>The President put his hand in his pocket, as did the shareholders of the troubled Béarn club, to bale the club out to the tune of \"...at least €800,000.\"
<BR>
<BR>The announcement came as a result of Alvarez\'s initial request for a financial report when he took control of the club last July.
<BR>
<BR>The report apparently mentions the club operating from a significant overdraft, rumoured to be some €600,000.
<BR>
<BR>As well as the money from the board and Alvarez, the club is awaiting approval from the town council of a special subsidy, thought to be around €400,000.
<BR>
<BR>Alvarez concluded his announcement by saying that Pau had \"zero financial problem today.\"
<BR>
