15 ideale

Full-back: Lee Byrne (Wales) - Given his chance by Warren Gatland after failing to make Wales' World Cup squad, the Ospreys full-back was a revelation. Strong under the high ball, kicked like a mule and incisive in attack. Cedric Heymans also sparkled for France, Anthony Floch showed promise and Andrea Marcato added a kicking dimension for Italy, but the Welshman looked a Lion-in-the-making.

Right wing: Vincent Clerc (France) - In a good tournament for wings, the Frenchman cemented his reputation as one of the smartest finishers around with five tries in three games, and it would have been more if France coach Marc Lievremont had picked him for every game. Ireland's Tommy Bowe, England's Paul Sackey and Wales' Mark Jones also had their moments.

Outside centre: Tom Shanklin (Wales) - Jamie Noon showed against Ireland what he could bring to the party in attack, with aid of a fly-half who could put him through some gaps, as well as his immense defence. But after being left out of the starting line-up for Wales' opener against England, Shanklin's direct running and clever angles re-established the best centre partnership in Europe.

Inside centre: Gavin Henson (Wales) - In the 12 Tests Henson and Shanklin have played together, Wales have never lost. Henson's return to top form, after his career had stalled through injury and indifferent selection, was a heartening sight. Straightened the line superbly, glided through gaps when they appeared, tackled strongly and was one of Shaun Edwards's defensive captains.

Left wing: Shane Williams (Wales) - Who else? The player of the tournament dazzled and delivered in equal measure, six tries taking him past Gareth Thomas's Wales record. Given licence to roam, his dancing feet, raw speed and dizzying changes of direction bamboozled many a would-be tackler, and pulled his weight in defence too. Honourable mentions for Ireland's Rob Kearney and France's Julien Malzieu.

Fly-half: James Hook or Stephen Jones (Wales) - The debate rages on, but what a lovely dilemma for Warren Gatland, who managed to utilise both players effectively, starting Hook on three occasions, Jones twice, with the latter coming on to play a vital hand against Scotland and France. While the stars of Jonny Wilkinson and Ronan O'Gara waned, Francois Trinh-Duc flickered brightly for France and Danny Cipriani showed in one game that he could out-shine them all.

Scrum-half: Mike Blair (Scotland) - A touch harsh on Mike Phillips perhaps, who gave Wales another dimension with his aggressive running, strong defence and coolness in a tight spot. But Blair showed that the battle for the Lions number nine jersey will be intense, showing a full skill-set in a struggling Scotland side and leading from the front in their win over England. Eoin Reddan started strongly for Ireland but faded.

Loose-head prop: Andrew Sheridan (England) - Another contentious one, given the England man-mountain could put in such a powerful display against France, and then lose his rag and give away stupid penalties against Scotland. Certain opponents appear to have worked out how to counter his scrummaging. Gethin Jenkins, who got better as the tournament went on, and perhaps Scot Allan Jacobsen, will provide competition on the Lions front.

Hooker: Dimitri Szarzewski (France) - A tough call, since no hooker played every match for any of the six countries, and none were stand-out performers. Scotland's Ross Ford showed distinct promise before injury struck, Leonardi Ghiraldini strengthened Italy's front row, and Szarzweski impressed with ball in hand but still needs to improve his line-out throwing. Aiming for the same targets game-to-game might help.

Tight-head prop: Martin Castrogiovanni (Italy) - Epitomised the Azzurri as a whole, providing the powerful set-piece platform from which their forwards generally competed strongly with every opposition pack. But ended as his country's top try-scorer, grabbing three of their total of six, illustrating their lack of punch behind their scrum. "Castro" would be a contender for a world XV, while Adam Jones came on strongly for Wales.

Lock: Ian Gough (Wales) - While Donncha O'Callaghan continued to produce solid displays for Ireland in trying circumstances, and Nathan Hines impressed in the Scotland boiler room, Wales' most consistent grunt-and-groan merchant grew into a potential Lions lock. Required medical treatment having returning to the dressing-room ashen-faced, and a stone lighter, after the rout of Italy.

Lock: Alun Wyn Jones (Wales) - A huge performance in the win at Twickenham illustrated the Welsh tyro's immense potential, his athleticism at the line-out complemented by his willingness and ability to make the hard yards with ball in hand. Missed the next two games through injury, but returned with another barnstorming display in Dublin. Steve Borthwick impressed for England, but the Welshman was a talismanic figure.

Blind-side flanker: Sergio Parisse (Italy)/Ryan Jones (Wales)- You can argue the merits of which one plays where, and both have proved adept at blind-side and number eight, but such was their contribution to the Italian and Welsh causes that a place had to be found for both of them. Tough on Jonathan Thomas, an un-sung hero for Wales, and Alasdair Strokosch, the find of the tournament for Scotland; James Haskell impressed for England too.

Open-side flanker: Martyn Williams (Wales) - Thierry Dusautoir would probably have challenged harder given more games for France, while his fellow back-row bandit Fulgence Ouedraogo also impressed. Michael Lipman can also be happy with his contribution for England. But Williams showed in the decider against France exactly why Warren Gatland tempted him out of retirement. The consummate link-man, a golden "Nugget" of a player.

Number eight: Ryan Jones (Wales)/Sergio Parisse (Italy) - Parisse appeared to be a one-man team at times for Italy, forcing turnovers, winning line-outs, claiming interceptions. Man-of-the-match against England, and excelled with the extra responsibility of captaincy. The same could be same for Jones, who carried the ball brilliantly, organised a parsimonious back-row and led the side through the odd tight spot to a Grand Slam in his first season as captain.

rugby365's Six Nations Team of the Tournament:

15 - Lee Byrne (Wales):
After playing three games in the 2006, he had just one run last year - against France in Paris. However, this powerful runner with a big kicking game was an established feature and a rock of the Grand Slam winning Welsh side this year. Strange to think he missed out on World Cup selection last year.
Bubbling under: Geordan Murphy (Ireland)

14 - Vincent Clerc (France):
He may be small of stature, but is actually very strong and can power through tackles. Has established himself as France's best wing.
Bubbling under: Paul Sackey (England)

13 - Tom Shanklin (Wales):
He is a vital cog in the Wales midfield. Deceptively quick and mixes determined defence with attacking flair. He was one of the stars of Wales' 2005 Grand Slam triumph and now has Slam dunk number two.
Bubbling under: Brian O'Driscoll (Ireland)

12 - Gavin Henson (Wales):
They say the cream rises to the top. A run of injuries, suspension and poor form limited him to just two Test starts since the 2005 Grand Slam campaign, but he did start against South Africa in November and is now again back to his best - an inside centre with a giant boot, strong defence and sharp attacking instincts.
Bubbling under: Mirco Bergamasco (Italy)

11 - Shane Williams (Wales);
He started the tournament with 35 test tries, second only on the Wales all-time list to Gareth Thomas, who has 39. He scored six more in the tournament and is now the proud owner of the Welsh record. Another star from the 2005 Grand Slam season that came back for a second taste of glory.
Bubbling under: Chris Paterson (Scotland)

10 - James Hook (Wales):
He first burst on to the international scene on the 2006 Argentina tour, before he had even played for the Ospreys. Although he is equally comfortable at inside centre or flyhalf, it is how he provides Wales with a different option (read game plans) to Stephen Jones that makes him so valuable.
Bubbling under: Danny Cipriani (England)

9 - Mike Blair (Scotland):
Having played second fiddle to Chris Cusiter for the Scotland No.9 shirt when he first broke into the Scotland squad, he is now arguably one of the first names down on the starting sheet.
Bubbling under: Eoin Reddan (Ireland)

8 - Sergio Parisse (Italy):
This season has been a far cry from 2002, when he was handed a baptism of fire in a 10-64 hammering at the hands of New Zealand. However, the highly-rated No.8 has now firmly established himself as one of Italy's key players.
Bubbling under: Ryan Jones (Wales)

7 - Martyn Williams (Wales):
Hauled out of retirement by Warren Gatland, this experienced flank produced some of the most outstanding displays in the tournament and must be - alongside Richie McCaw - the world's premier openside flank.
Bubbling under: Michael Lipman (England)

6 - Thierry Dusautoir (France):
It has been a remarkable past year. In July last year he was not even in the France squad. Now, after a stellar World Cup campaign, he is one of the first names on the Les Bleus' team-sheet. Dusautoir, who did not play rugby until the age of 16, has a tremendous workrate and is terrier-like in the tackle.
Bubbling under: Alasdair Strokosch (Scotland)

5 - Alun-Wyn Jones (Wales):
Jones, who made his Test debut on the Argentina tour in 2006, played every Test for Wales in 2007 - apart from the two mid-year games in Australia. He showed again in the Grand Slam effort why he is so highly rated. Predominantly a lock, Jones can also play at blindside flank.
Bubbling under: Marco Bortolami (Italy)

4 - Donncha O'Callaghan (Ireland):
When Ireland's tight five misfired at the World Cup, O'Callaghan was as disappointing as any of them. However, in the Six Nations he was back to producing his customary high work-rate and willingness to roll up his sleeves in the trenches.
Bubbling under: Ian Gough (Wales)

3 - Martin Castrogiovanni (Italy):
Castrogiovanni made his international debut in the 2002 mid-year tour against the All Blacks, and has been ever-present since. Probably his finest hour came on the 2004 tour against Japan, where he scored a hat-trick - a rarity for a prop at any level. Castrogiovanni continued his try-scoring feast in the just completed Six Nations with three more tries.
Bubbling under: Adam Jones (Wales)

2 - Leonardo Ghiraldini (Italy):
Another member of the front row club that had his origins in the back row. The talented Ghiraldini is considered the backbone of the Italy team of the future.
Bubbling under: Dimitri Szarzewski (France)

1 - Andrew Sheridan (England):
Sheridan's wrecking job on a hapless Australian front row - twice - is what has earned him the tag as the most destructive prop in world rugby, the pillar of an England pack. Sheridan's best years in an England shirt are probably still to come.
Bubbling under: Andrea Lo Cicero (Italy)
