Non mi sembra che Treviso, Overmach e Padova abbiano mai pensato a schierare i rincalzi quest'anno, nè tantomeno Viadana e Calvisano(a parte quest'ultimo turno)...
The Benetton Treviso coach played for the Newport club in the 1999 / 2000 European Challenge Cup tournament before moving to Italy and playing for Treviso for three seasons.
Now the former South African outside half will send his Italian champions out against Newport Gwent Dragons in Pool 1 searching for the Heineken Cup win to confirm their development on the big European stage.
“We obviously want to win next week as a victory in the Heineken Cup would be a big step for this squad,” said Smith, who saw his side pipped 35-33 by the Dragons in Round 3.
“This is our first season together so, until now, it has not been about winning or losing, but rather growing as a team. However, we have been developing with every game and last Saturday was our best performance so far. We are clearly getting better and now it is time to get that win.
“It was disappointing to miss out last week by such a narrow margin but I was very impressed by the way the players are responding and how they approached the Dragons game last weekend. Now we have to go one step further.
“We will give it everything next week and try our best in Newport. It takes time for things to come together but we have been working hard and we will fight in every game. We are showing progress but we have to keep it going.
“What impressed me most about the team last weekend was that we didn’t panic when we were 25-6 down at half-time and then 32-13 behind early in the second half.
A lot of teams would have lost the plot but we showed composure to get right back in it and even to lead until late on.
“Our set-piece went well but if we are to beat Newport then we have to improve our tackling because it went hay-wire under pressure at the start.
“The missed tackles cost us two tries in the first half. It’s not a failing of their technique but just getting used to the intensity of the Heineken Cup once again. The problem is that you cannot afford to give good sides that sort of help in this competition because they will score tries.
“We don’t lack anything in effort or the will to win but perhaps a little experience at this level. We have not won yet but we will keep working hard and fighting hard because we have a lot of pride in the jersey.
“Ever since the draw was made and we knew we were in with Perpignan, London Irish and the Dragons in the Heineken Cup I have been following how the teams have been doing.
“What I want most of all from our Heineken Cup matches is to earn respect in Europe. I don’t want people saying that when they play us they will score a lot of points.
“We are leading the Super 10 at the moment and I think we are on track for where I want us to go.
“I have not been back in Wales since 2000 but I have kept in touch with a lot of friends there and naturally I have kept a particular eye out for the Dragons, watching every one of their games that I can.”

Infine, per noi italiani, saranno al cardiopalma le due sfide trasmesse da Sky sabato e domenica. Perpignan-London Irish e Toulouse-Leicester sono già decisive e vedono di fronte quattro delle più forti squadre europee. Vincere significa prenotare i quarti di finale, perdere equivale a un fallimento.
Insomma, tre giorni di passione ci aspettano in Europa. Tre giorni da dentro e fuori e da partite della disperazione. Per le italiane, obbligate a vincere, o almeno a convincere. Un altro 71-7 non possiamo permettercelo a meno di due mesi dall’inizio del 6 Nazioni."

dimostrazione che se squadre italiane se la giocano alla pari, e il viadana lo sta facendo, non sono poi tanto inferiori, basta placcare e una grande determinazione. auguri per il secondo tempo
