NZRU put enhanced offer to Carter
7:51PM Monday April 28, 2008

The New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) has reportedly offered All Blacks first five-eighth Daniel Carter a tailored offer that will allow him to enjoy a stint playing rugby overseas next year.

If he accepts, Carter is set to become the first All Black to be allowed a "sabbatical" on a short-term offshore contract or to take a rest while remaining signed to the NZRU and eligible to represent his country.

The world class No 10 has been linked to multi-million dollar moves to French clubs Toulouse and Toulon but the NZRU is desperate to keep one of the game's biggest drawcards on its books.

NZRU professional services manager Neil Sorenson said the union met Carter's representatives over the weekend.

Sorenson wouldn't reveal details of the discussions but various New Zealand media outlets today reported the 26-year-old had been offered the chance to travel offshore and return to New Zealand in time for the home tests in June next year.

Currently NZRU rules dictate that players must play in the preceding domestic competition to be considered for the All Blacks.

However, the board has the right to waive that under extraordinary circumstances, meaning Carter would not be required to suit up for the Crusaders in next year's Super 14.

The sabbatical option would only be employed in contract negotiations for New Zealand's marquee players, Sorenson added.

"We would say the top half dozen is the number we'd be offering this to," he said.

"We're not going to treat a top-line world class All Black as we would treat an Air New Zealand Cup player."

Sorenson said it was a balance not to upset Super 14 franchises or rugby's sponsors and supporters.

A new tactic proposed at NZRU board level just last week to combat an increased player drain, it allows players to earn a large salary offshore while enjoying a cultural change.

Other action taken by the union includes a complete review of the competition structure in New Zealand to make it more attractive for players to remain at home.

Carter has plenty of time to make his decision, with his current NZRU contract expiring at the end of the year.

NZRU chief executive Steve Tew said Carter would be given space to make a decision.

"We would like to settle it as soon as Dan is ready to make a decision but he must really drive that timetable because we don't want to put any more pressure on him that he's already got," Tew told The Press newspaper.

"We will let his decision-making take its course. It's not just about him, it's about his partner Honor (Dillon) as well."

Neither Carter nor his agents from the Auckland-based company Global Sports Management are commenting.

"It is something we think might work for Dan," Tew said.

"It's not unusual in other industries, so we are going to put that on the table for some guys we think it might work for. Maybe we have to tailor our offers for the individual."

Se questo si avvera........bye bye Daniel........WELCOME SONNY!!!!!! nessuno si ricordera' di DC.......

Sonny Bill open to All Black poaching
9:00AM Friday May 02, 2008

Bulldogs superstar Sonny Bill Williams would seriously contemplate switching to rugby union and chase dual international status if the All Blacks offered him enough money.

Williams' thoughts are sure to send shockwaves through Belmore after the club secured him on a bargain five-year deal last year worth around $400,000 a season.

The fact Williams agreed to less than his market value for a longer term deal could come back to haunt the Bulldogs if the New Zealand Rugby Union moves to poach the 22-year-old.

Just last month, Williams said his belief in loyalty was diminished after Willie Mason walked out on the Bulldogs last November and in the future he would only sign deals that looked after him and his family.

He could easily command double his NRL contract at the All Blacks and said the lure of defecting to union was genuine.

"It's probably the number one sport and game in New Zealand and every young kid aspires to such great heights as playing for the All Blacks," he told the Nine Network.

"If they (NZRU) did come knocking with a good offer I would definitely have to sit down and seriously look at it.

"I'm grown up now and professional so, yeah, I would have to say yes."

Unlikely to defect from the NRL is Parramatta halfback Brett Finch.

Finch is almost certain to re-sign with the Eels in the next fortnight and reject several offers to defect to the English Super League.

His manager Steve Gillis held talks with Eels management this week, is now waiting for an offer in writing from the club and won't negotiate with other clubs until all options at Parramatta are exhausted.

"We are off and running, hopefully we know more in the next week," said Gillis.

"He has always said he would like to stay so we are working toward that now.

"The length (of the deal) is not going to affect his decision.

"There is a fair bit of interest there (English clubs) but he is only 26 and (it's) probably a bit early for him."

Cronulla halfback Brett Kimmorley met with his manager George Mimis on Thursday to discuss plans to find a new home for 2009.

But at least one English club, either Hull KR or Wigan, is out of the running after Canberra granted a release to halfback Michael Dobson to return to the Super League.

Dobson will play his final game for the Raiders in Auckland against the Warriors on Sunday, but his departure for England won't be confirmed until his visa is finalised.

Canberra officials were in Sydney on Thursday discussing off-contract Wests Tigers backrower Chris Heighington but are yet to formalise an offer for the NSW Country debutant.

Manager Wayne Beavis said there is plenty of interest in Heighington and he would not rush into a decision on his future.

Also keeping everyone guessing is Wigan star Trent Barrett, with Beavis unable to confirm if he has asked for a release to return to the NRL next season.

Manly, meanwhile, are reportedly making moves for North Queensland utility Justin Smith to fill the troublesome five-eighth position.

The Sea Eagles have granted former Kiwi Test centre David Vaealiki an immediate release so he could accept a two-year rugby union offer in France.

Gold Coast re-signed fullback Preston Campbell for a further season, keeping him at the club until 2009, with his future beyond next year to be discussed at a later date.

Penrith have promoted general manager Michael Leary to rugby league chief executive with Panthers CEO Glenn Matthews to focus purely on the leagues club.

Leary said his goal was to get the club "winning games" and to keep developing their large nursery of young stars, but did not rule out making a move to sign Roosters captain Craig Fitzgibbon.

"We are having a look around at the moment ... (Fitzgibbon) would most probably come into the equation, but not very strongly," he said.

Carter to re-sign with NZRU
By RICHARD KNOWLER - The Press | Tuesday, 03 June 2008

All Blacks star Dan Carter is poised to re-sign with the New Zealand Rugby Union until the 2011 World Cup.

Carter yesterday publicly confirmed for the first time he is looking to play for a French club on a six month contract that could see him skip next season's Super 14, but wants to return home to represent the All Blacks in June and through until the global tournament is held in New Zealand.

Speculation about Carter's playing future has been a hot topic in recent months and until now the first five-eighths has side-stepped the issue.

He is negotiating with two French clubs, one of which is Toulon. The other remains unknown.
One of Carter's managers, Warren Alcock from The Essentially Group, is hopeful negotiations with the NZRU would be settled soon, possibly as early as Friday.

"They have responded very positively. Given the attitude they have shown to this to date, I cannot see this falling over."

Carter, 26, who has played 46 tests for the All Blacks since 2003, said representing his country was his main priority.

"For that reason I have decided to re-sign with the New Zealand Rugby Union, ideally to 2011.

"If selected I certainly want to be a part of a successful All Blacks World Cup campaign."

The chances of Carter embarking on a short stint to play in France next year look highly likely, meaning the Crusaders will have to operate without their star pivot as they look to defend their Super 14 title under a new coach.

"I want to return in 2010 and 2011 to be part of the Crusaders and Canterbury squads," Carter added.

"I have made no final decision about the sabbatical and where I will be, but it should be resolved in the next fortnight or so."

The NZRU has relaxed its regulations to allow key players the chance to play offshore, experience a different lifestyle and earn big money in the hope they will return to play for the All Blacks.

In Carter's instance, he stands to earn up to $1.4 million for on a six month contract with a club such as Toulon.

"The sabbatical is a positive experience but there is still a lot of work to do in that area," Alcock.

"Dan is doing his homework on which club he will sign with and he talk to them this week. There is still a bit of due diligence to be done."

Carter will be available to tour with the All Blacks when they play in Hong Kong and Great Britain at the end of the season.
