Mitchell signs for Connacht
<BR>
<BR>Connacht have confirmed the signing of Irish-qualified prop Hamish Mitchell from New Zealand side Taranaki.
<BR>The 24-year-old Mitchell, who came on as a substitute for Taranaki against the Lions this summer, is the Irish province\'s third Southern Hemisphere signing this summer - following the arrivals of South African prop/hooker Chris Venter and New Zealand lock Andrew Gallagher.
<BR>Mitchell, 18 stone and 6ft 5ins, will link up with Connacht following the conclusion of Taranaki\'s current campaign, and may offer a selection headache to Ireland coach Eddie O\'Sullivan.
<BR>
<BR>Irish-qualified by virtue of his grandparents, Mitchell could force his way into international contention by impressing in Connacht\'s Celtic League campaign, which begins tomorrow at home to Cardiff, and the knockout stages of the European Challenge Cup, for which he will be eligible.

<BR>Connacht manager Tim Allnutt said of the new signing: ``We are taking a long-term view on this signing. Hamish is a quality prop who will be a big addition to our squad. He is coming here to further his career and he knows that if everything works out for him, he has an Irish place to chase down.\'\'

<BR>Glasgow Warriors have confirmed another signing for this season. Super League winger Hefin O’Hare, 26, is joining them on a two year contract.
<BR>The Huddersfield Giants’ player made his international rugby league debut for Wales in 2002 against the touring New Zealand team and has been a stalwart of the team since. He is renowned in rugby league for his blistering pace.
<BR>Glasgow Warriors’ head coach Hugh Campbell said: “We look forward to Hefin’s arrival and boosting our back three options. He’s a quality act and has played age-grade international rugby union for Wales, so he knows what he’s about.”

<BR>\"Rugby: l\'utopia della Celtic League\"

<BR>I sogni di gloria legati alla partecipazione dei club italiani alla Celtic league (campionato rugbistico di marca britannica) hanno mandato in frantumi il delicato \"giocattolo\" della Lega italiana rugby d\'eccellenza, che, dietro la consulenza dello studio Ghiretti, era riuscito a vivere di luce propria e a caratterizzarsi sotto il profilo del marketing (con l\'ingresso di sponsor importanti come Findomestic e Skoda). Non ultimo il debutto assoluto, a partire di questa stagione, su Sky con un format televisivo ad hoc e, perfino, il lancio di una mascotte (il \"grillotalpa\").

<BR>Lo scorso 1° settembre, in sede di conferenza stampa a Firenze (per venire incontro alle esigenze dello \"sponsor-padrone di casa\" Findomestic), il presidente dimissionario della L.i.r.e., Amerino Zatta (nei nuovi panni di dirigente della Benetton Treviso) ha dichiarato, senza mezzi termini, che la Celtic league è una scelta obbligata e che il \"Super10 (massimo campionato di serie A di rugby), negli ultimi anni, si è livellato e non certo verso l\'alto\". Parole dure, a favore di una serie rugbistica straniera, che di fatto spacca il fronte del Super10 azzerando gli \"sforzi marketing\" di queste ultime stagioni, nell\'ottica della crescita graduale dell\'intero campionato. Non a caso la stessa Sky sembra essere uscita dalla conferenza di presentazione della stagione 2005/6 con più dubbi che certezze e non si può escludere, in caso di migrazione dei migliori team nella Celtic league, l\'abbandono della stessa Findomestic (title-sponsor del Super10). Interessata ad investire sul rugby, ma con uno standard qualitativo di alto profilo.

<BR>Le polemiche di questi ultimi giorni dimostrano, comunque, la mancanza di orizzonti ed obiettivi chiari da parte della stragrande maggioranza della dirigenza settore. Troppi sognatori, poche persone concrete. Forse l\'ingresso della Nazionale italiana nel Sei Nazioni ha creato più problemi che opportunità, visto che il movimento azzurro non è ancora in grado autonomamente (o a livello di club) di competere con il mercato britannico/europeo. Sia sotto il profilo sportivo (visto i risultati deludenti dell\'ultimo quadriennio), sia in ambito marketing/commerciale. Il rischio di una Celtic league con squadre italiane è quello di trasformarsi in \"sparring-partner\" di lusso, con un conseguente impoverimento del più importante campionato nazionale. Il Super10 ha bisogno di crescere ulteriormente prima di poter \"cedere\" ad altre leghe i pezzi più pregiati.

<BR>Una super lega non è mai partita nel calcio, figuriamoci se è possibile crearla in un mercato molto più piccolo come quello della palla ovale.

L\'editoriale di Sporteconomy mi sembra eccessivamente critico e pessimistico, però mette in luce problemi ai quali non avevo pensato: gli sponsor ed i propietari dei diritti televisivi del Super Ten saranno molto meno interessati ad un SuperTen declassato dalla mancanza delle quattro squadre migliori; sia Sky che gli sponsor potrebbero dirottare i propri investimenti sulla Celtic, ma la quantità di denaro ricadente sul movimento azzurro potrebbe alla fine essere inferiore a quella attuale.
