Nuovo coach Noriega...........

By Dan Baynes
Dec. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Eddie Jones, Australia's longest-
serving professional rugby coach, was fired after the Wallabies
lost eight of their past nine Tests. New South Wales Waratahs
coach Ewen McKenzie said he's keen to take the job.
The Australian Rugby Union said it decided to appoint a new
coach after reviewing the team's performances. The 45-year-old
Jones, who was appointed in 2001, had been contracted to lead the
Wallabies through the 2007 World Cup.
``One win in nine matches is far from satisfactory,'' ARU
Managing Director Gary Flowers said. ``This isn't an easy
decision, but it is in the best interests of Australian rugby.''
Today's decision ends speculation over Jones's future that
has swirled since the Wallabies returned from last month's tour
to Europe with one win from four Tests. The team crashed to seven
straight defeats this year, its worst losing streak in 36 years.
``I'm just really disappointed in the decision,'' Jones told
a news conference at the ARU's Sydney headquarters. ``We haven't
won enough games. In the end the head coach takes responsibility
for those performances.''
Waratahs coach McKenzie, David Nucifora of the Auckland
Blues and former Queensland coach John Connolly are among the
candidates to replace him, the Australian newspaper said. John
Mitchell, who guided New Zealand's All Blacks to an 85 percent
winning ratio, today ruled himself out of contention.

National Job

Former Wallabies prop McKenzie, who guided the Waratahs to
the Super 12 final in May, said he'll apply.
``I'm fully committed to coaching the Waratahs next year but
see no reason why I couldn't make the transition to the national
job immediately afterwards, if I was the successful candidate,''
McKenzie, 40, said in a New South Wales Rugby Union statement.
A three-man panel including former Wallabies coach Rod
Macqueen will oversee the appointment of a new coach. The panel
will seek suggestions from past and present players and make a
recommendation to the ARU's board in February.
``The ARU strongly believes we must give the Wallabies a
fresh start with a new coach who will give us the best possible
chance of future success,'' Flowers added.
The two-time world champion Wallabies won 33 of 57 Tests
under Jones, who replaced Macqueen in July 2001. Against fellow
top five-ranked nations New Zealand, South Africa, France and
England, the Wallabies won 14 of 36 matches during his tenure.
Jones, who was told of the decision yesterday, had been
criticized by former players including Australia's 1991 World
Cup-winning captain Nick Farr-Jones, who said last month the team
had become ``robots'' whose play was too predictable.

Scrum Scrutiny

Australia's forward play has come under particular scrutiny
after the Wallabies pack was overpowered in losses to France and
England. In recent weeks, former players joined local media in
calling for the appointment of a specialist scrummaging coach.
Writing in the Sunday Times newspaper on Nov. 13, former New
Zealand captain Sean Fitzpatrick called the Australian scrum ``a
disgrace.'' The Wallabies were shunted around Twickenham and
resorted to illegal tactics to stop England's momentum.
When Jones took over, Australia held the World Cup,
Bledisloe Cup and Tri-Nations titles. The Wallabies were beaten
in the 2003 World Cup final after upsetting tournament favorite
New Zealand in the semifinals. They finished last in this year's
Tri-Nations after losing all four games for the first time in the
competition's 10-year history.
U.K. bookmaker William Hill rates Australia the 7/1 fifth-
favorite to win the 2007 World Cup behind New Zealand, France,
South Africa and England. The Wallabies' 1999 World Cup victory
came two years after Macqueen replaced Greg Smith as coach.
``It's never too late to turn things around,'' former ARU
Chief Executive John O'Neill said in an interview today. ``The
Australian Rugby Union has the players and will continue to
produce talented athletes.''
