Nuovo tallonatore per il NOrthampton

Puma hooker heads for Saints
Tuesday June 27 2006
Northampton sign 20-year-old Cortese
Northampton Saints signed the young Argentinean hooker Matias Cortese on a two-year deal on Tuesday.

Cortese won full international honours for the Pumas against Samoa in December last year after moving through the age group teams with the U21s and U19s.

He played in last year’s IRB U21 World Championships in Argentina where he came up against new team-mate and competition for the hooker spot, Dylan Hartley, and competed in this year’s tournament in France.

Hailing from Federico Mendez’s home town of Mendoza, Cortese will be the third Argentinean player to sign to Saints in the modern era in the wake of Mendez and prop Martin Scelzo.

"We decided we needed extra cover in the hooker position as Steve Thompson and Dylan Hartley may be called up to the England and U21 sides in during the Six Nations period," said Director of Rugby Budge Pountney.

"Dylan is also currently recovering from a back injury. Matias is just 20 and has already made his mark on the international scene. We are sure he will flourish here under the tutelage of former hooker Peter Sloane, our new forwards coach for next season."

Cortese, who is 6’1” (1m 90) and weighs in at 17st 5lbs (110 kg), qualifies as an EU player through his Italian passport. He will arrive for pre-season training at the start of July.

Tykes retain two youngsters
Tuesday June 27 2006
Biggs and Vickerman stay at Headingley
Leeds Tykes have been handed a timely boost at the start of pre-season training with the news that young stars Tom Biggs, 21, and Rob Vickerman, 20, have agreed new long term deals with the club.

Tom Biggs: Staying in Leeds

The Tykes begin their National Division One campaign in September at Headingley Carnegie but the long, pre-season schedule began this week as new Director of Rugby Stuart Lancaster looks to lead his side back in to the Guinness Premiership.

Biggs was the Tykes Player of the Season last year scoring ten tries in all competitions and has agreed a new three year deal to keep him at Headingley Carnegie until at least the end of the 2008/9 season.

He is marked down as a huge talent for the future, and was the subject of speculation from a number of Premiership clubs.

Vickerman, who like Biggs joined the Tykes from Hymers College in Hull, has agreed a new two-year contract with the club.

Vickerman made a big impact in his first season in the Guinness Premiership last year before he suffered a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament in January which ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

"I’m delighted that Tom and Rob have committed their long term future to the club," said Lancaster.

They are both proud Yorkshiremen who want to stay with the club and help return us to the Premiership. Both of them were approached by Premiership clubs in the close season but they want to be part of the club going forward in the future.

"Tom and Rob have come through the Academy system and performed extremely well in the Premiership.

"Tom has consistently scored tries since coming in to the first team squad two seasons ago and Rob was developing well before his injury last season. They will be a big part of our plans for this season and the years to come."

Lancaster has also confirmed that the Tykes have not finished their recruitment for next season yet with at least three more signings likely to be confirmed this week.

Italian international centre Walter Pozzebon is the latest addition to the Bristol Rugby squad, signing a two year deal as Richard Hill continues his preparations for the 2006-7 season.
Pozzebon, who has just turned 27, has won 21 caps for Italy having made his debut against Ireland in February 2001 and joins from Benetton Treviso.
His domestic honours include three Italian Championships with Benetton Treviso (2001, 2003, 2004) and one Italian Cup (2005).
More recently, he represented Italy A in the recent IRB Nations Cup in Portugal playing alongside Marko Stanojevic. Italy A finished second behind Argentina A (who featured Bernardo Stortoni).
He also possesses a wealth of European experience with four Heineken Cup and two European Challenge cup campaigns with Treviso under his belt and will add some international quality to the squad as the Head Coach explained:
"He's an exciting international centre who will bring some quality to the squad. He's actually been studying for a degree over the past two seasons which is why he hasn't featured so much but he's back to rugby full time now."
"Walter can actually play a number of positions. I spoke to both John Kirwan and Pierre Berbizier and they had nothing but good things to say about him and said what a talented player he is."
"He's probably best at 13 but he's quick enough to play on the wing and Berbizier said that he's a talented playmaker who they're actually considering at 10."
"He's a talented footballer with a good mentality. He speaks good English. He's already been over and met the boys. He'll fit in well and is definitely one for the future."
