Who would have known that rugby could have changed history. Fidel Castro meeting his revolutionary partner Ernesto (Che) Guevera might have only occurred due to rugby.

The movie 'Motorcycle Diaries' (based on a book written by Alberto Granado titled : Traveling with Che Guevara: The Making of a Revolutionary) describes a trip that Che took with his friend Alberto who he met through playing rugby (# 9 & # 12) for Cordoba in Argentina .

These two rugby fanatics made their way around South America until they reached Venezuela where they parted ways for seven years until Che asked Alberto Granado to become part of the Cuban revolution (he founded the faculty of medicine at the University of Santiago) in 1960. It’s this trip that laid the foundation for Che’s revolutionary passion, as he was disturbed by the disparity within the classes. In turn he went to Guatemala to pursue his revolutionary dreams after which he landed up meeting his revolutionary partner Fidel and together they went on to change the course of history.

Although the revolution did not immediately bring rugby to Cuba, the game made its way there through the work of Max Bouix. A French expatriate working in Cuba, Max worked hard in 1993 with university students Chukin Chao and Juan Carlos Nunez, who are now the leaders of Cuban rugby. They along with many others with limited help from outside of their borders worked hard in difficult conditions to keep the game prospering in their country. There is now rugby played in all fifteen provinces and with increasing numbers of coaches, players and rugby referees the sport is working towards reaching national funding status.

A group of coaches and referees organized by Karl Fix and funded by the Dog River Howlers with some support from Rugby Canada went to Cuba on February14th, to hold three days of coaching and refereeing clinics in the capital city of Havana.

I had the pleasure of working with seven entusiastic rugby die-hards to help them become the first Cuban Level One qualified IRB referees. Canadian national men's sevens team coach Shane Thompson worked with some very enthusiastic and athletic backs, who did not allow a little thing like playing in bare feet deter their determination. Kevin Wirachowski, Canada’s scrumaging coach introduced Cuba to its first ever scrum machine (a Scrummaster sled) which was left behind for them.

The connection that began with Chukin Chao and Karl Fix carried on to the Dog River Howlers/Regina Rogues November 2007 tour and has now evolved into a great bond between Canadian and Cuban rugby. I would encourage any Canadian clubs to follow up on that and in turn tour this wonderful island. It has it all: amazing beaches, great music, interesting and unique culture, grand old colonial architecture, friendly people and a rugby community who welcomes you with open arms.

Upon hearing the good tidings about the new found Canadian rugby connection Che Guevera’s Motor Cycle Diaries friend Alberto Granado invited us to his home to meet with him and his entire family.

That was followed by dinner at the beautiful colonial home of the father of Cuban rugby Max Bouix, where Alberto, after copious amounts of red wine, sang rugby songs and recanted some old Che stories which according to rugby tradition “stays on tour”( our lips are sealed). It was one of those magical rugby nights I’m sure none of us will ever forget.

A seguire Russia - Georgia... ma quella credo che sia troppo "mainstream" per questa discussione... visto che una partita del gruppo A e non del gruppo D come la prima!!

Devo fare una premessa... sono arrivato mostruosamente in ritardo, e la Club house con i suoi panini e la sua birra, i due tre old presenti sempre pronti a scambiare commenti e impressioni sul sei nazioni appena finito mi hanno un po' distratto....

Cose strane: per la Croazia, quando sono arrivato io, piazzava un flanker....
L'estremo del Lussemburgo mi ha ricordato gli estremi di una volta, piccolo piccolo, ma tanto piccolo... ma velocissimo.

Elimino subito la suspense: ha vinto il Lussemburgo abbastanza facilmente, molto più abile della Croazia nel gioco alla mano. Se non ho capito male il Lussemburgo è prima nel girone e giocherà per la promozione nel gruppo C contro la Serbia (o la Moldova... ma credo la Serbia....).

Note di colore: durante il terzo tempo la nazionale del Lussemburgo esibiva delle fantastiche giacche doppiopetto con bottoni dorati... un po' old style.... che facevano presagire che il futuro per molti di questi ragazzi sarà dietro la scrivania di una qualche banca lussemburghese più che su un campo da rugby!
I giocatori croati erano visibilmente abbacchiati, e anche un po' rotti (mi hanno detto che ci sono stati anche un paio di infortuni un po' pesanti). Alcuni di loro avevano dei minacciosi tagli di capelli alla moicana.....

ciao a tutti, io frequento cuba (mia moglie è dell'Havana) , ho trovato il campo dove si giocava ma ho chiesto in giro e nessuno sa dirmi dove sia finita la squadra di rugby e se esista ancora, ho chiesto alla ciudad deportiva ( dove si allenano gli atleti delle nazionali) e nessuno sa dirmi niente, inoltre quello che compare sul sito cuba rugby è tutta roba vecchia, qualcuno sa dirmi qualcosa ? sarei interessato a giocare con loro!!!!!!

Beh, viste le approfondite ricerche che hai fatto te sul posto, mi sembra difficile che qualcuno dall'Italia possa saperne di più!

Poland underlined their strength in the Nations Cup Group 2B when they overpowered Malta in a qualifier played in front of a packed Hibs Ground yesterday.
The Poles, with four players hailing from the professional French League, underlined their pedigree with a classy performance of powerful rugby.
Malta did try to offer a challenge to the group winners and frustrated Poland with some stout defensive play. But, in the end, the more experienced Poles proved too strong for the hosts who succumbed to a fifth defeat in the group.
Poland finished top with 22 points while Malta remain fourth with 11 points, two ahead of Andorra. The latter will host Malta in La Vella next weekend in a decisive match to avoid relegation to Division 3A.
It was Poland who struck first after 12 minutes when Dawid Banasek intercepted Rohan Spiteri's pass and the centre stormed clean through to score a try between the posts. Jurij Buhalo scored the converstion to put Poland 7-0 ahead.
Malta's response included some good running from hooker Harry Collins. On 22 minutes, he earned a penalty that was converted by centre Paul Marzella.
Poland had Pawel Novak yellow carded for foul play on 25 minutes but Malta failed to profit from an extra man on the field. Instead, it was the visitors who scored two minutes from the interval when Maciej Miskiewicz concluded some good passing play for the visitors' second try of the match. Buhalo again cooly converted and Poland led 14-3.
Before half-time, Malta closed the gap when Marzella scored from another penalty.
Poland, however, increased their advantage after the restart when Buhalo scored from a penalty. The match went beyond the hosts' reach on the hour when from a fine team move it was Buhalo who stormed through for the try to extend Poland's lead to 22-6.
The Poles kept piling up the pressure but on 65 minutes Kamil Dudlowski was sin-binned for foul play and Marzella profited when scoring his third penalty of the day - 22-9.
But, two minutes from time substitute Lukas Zorawski scored Poland's fourth try which was easily converted by Dawid Banaszek.
Late on, Malta's resilent play was rewarded when Luke Vella ran between the posts for a try and Marzella duly converted for a final 29-16 scoreline.
Standings: Poland 22; Latvia 18; Croatia 16; Malta 11; Andorra 9.
Remaining match (Saturday): Andorra vs Malta.
Aftermatch comments
Damien Neill, the Malta coach, was pleased with the spirit shown by his players.
"Poland are a very strong team and put us under pressure for much of the match," he said.
"But my players showed great character and never gave up. I think, any other team at this group would have folded against such tough opposition but we kept trying till the end. That final try was a just reward for our efforts."
Looking ahead to the match against Andorra, Neill said: "I'm concerned with the number of injured players we have. We've got Oliver Sacco, Paul Marzella and James Finlason who are struggling for fitness.
"But, this week, we'll try to recover and get back into shape. We lost against Poland but the performance was indeed encouraging. In a way, it was a psychological fillip for the players ahead of our trip to Andorra."

il Belgio in una decina di anni scarsi é passato dal 52° posto nel ranking al 27° guadagnandosi sul campo un'amichevole con cap contro i pumas e l'onore di essere in campo contro i Barbarians sabato. Sabato non verrà dato il cap in quanto verrano impiegati degli invitati nelle fila del Belgio.

Da come puoi vedere sono super campioni e quindi credo che per essere più competitivi si rafforzino un po' un po' come succedeva da noi con i quindici del presidente. Non sono riuscito a trovare la formazione del belgium XV pero'. A livello fisico dovrebbero tenere visto che hanno tenuto testa ai pumas lo scorso agosto.
I campionati sono divisi come tutto in Belgio in base all'origine linguistica delle squadre per quanto riguarda le serie minori mentre la serie A é l'espressione di tutta la nazione. Nella serie A, 10 squadre, fanno parte compagini soprattutto di area francofona per evidenti ragioni storiche. Nella zona fiamminga, almeno a Leuven per quello che ho potuto vedere, i sudafricani afrikaans hanno aiutato parecchio a diffodnere il rugby culturalmente e allenando pure. L'internazionalità della zona ha fatto il resto.
Il livello: un mio collega con esperienza in fed3 francese gioca con l'Ottignies che é in serie A. Il suo capitano, mediano di mischia, gioca in nazionale ed é stato il gancio per organizzare con Pichot l'incontro dello scorso anno contro i pumas.
Se non sbaglio c'é un seconda linea belga che gioca a Beziers, parecchi che giocano nell'Artois francese in fed2 e qualcuno anche in fed1.
Quindi livello dilettantistico ma esperienza in campionati come quelli delle serie minori francesi dove si suda!
Ultimo dato lo scorso 3 Maggio hanno dato la tariffa all'olanda! 52 a 3 o giù di li quindi secondo me sono davvero pronti per fare il grande passo. Non mi stupirei se in un decennio si ritrovassero a giocare a livello di sei nazioni B

allora resoconto partita:

innanzitutto c'era anche Dellapé! Ha giocato con Pucciarello il secondo tempo. Partita ovviamnete a senso unico tra una squadra di professionisti ed una di amatori.

Partita finita 10-84 con 4 mete di G. Thomas schierato all'ala. grandissima prestazione di Larkham entrato nel secondo tempo. Le due mete belghe su calcio di liberazione stoppato.

Alla fine ad ogni meta provava a trasformare uno diverso, ci ha provato pure Pucciarello.

Gran bella giornata di rugby, quasi 20000 spettatori.

In effetti il tentativo di trasformazione di Pucciarello é stato qualcosa fatto per i posteri che se no rimane solo tra te prima linea e al massimo arriva fino al numero 9! Credo che gli abbiano promesso dieci casse di birra per la figuraccia prossima ventura.

Comunque per la cronaca: le due mete prima erano state trasformate da Larkham ed ecco arrivare un'altra meta. vedo il giocatore dei Baa baas che prende la rincorsa, aspetta un po' alla JW e calcia. La mia ragazza mi guarda e mi fa che ciabattata....la palla si é alzata mezzo metro e rotolando é arrivata a 5 metri dai pali. Vedo tutto i baa baas che ridono e trotterellando vedo un gicoatore con il 17 ( Pucciarello appunto) piazzarsi sul culo di Dellapé per prendere il rilancio Belga. tutte cose che fanno bene o male al rugby
