Socino already pumped for pre-season
JUAN Pablo Socino has vowed to start pre-season with a bang.
After a marathon campaign, featuring in all but one of Nottingham's league and cup matches, the nuggety Argentine centre has taken full-advantage of his five-week off-season by jetting back to South America.
While the 23-year-old (pictured) described his maiden season with the Green and Whites as unforgettable, having finished as the club's top try scorer and earned a place in the RFU Championship Dream XV, he admits the exhausting campaign demanded an immediate retreat from the game.
With an intense four-week fitness block awaiting him on his return to the East Midlands at the end of the month, Socino is determined to have the energy to to impress the coaching staff from the get-go.
"Going home is my chance to switch off after a really, really long season and recharge my batteries so I can come back and get straight into it," Socino said.
"I'm really happy with the season I had personally. Finishing as the top try scorer was great and I feel my game improved a lot, I felt a lot better as a player and am a lot more confident in myself.
"I'll always remember the season that I just had, but I reviewed it straight away and put it behind me straight away because I have more to look forward to."
As one of 13 players contracted to Nottingham for another season, Socino is key to director of rugby Glenn Delaney's plans.
The Green and Whites have been quiet in the transfer market as club boss try to delicately balance the squad list that already includes, Brent Wilson, David Jackson, James Arlidge, Tim Streather, Andy Savage, Jack Cobden, Alex Shaw, Phil Eggleshaw, Nic Rouse, Joe Duffey, Matt Parr and Matt Shields.
By the start of pre-season on May 28, Delaney aims to have his full-squad assembled.
"We had a lot of guys that had a load to learn this year, who went through a lot of experiences which will stand them in better stead as a team," Delaney said.
"We were a drop goal away from being in the semis which is pretty painful and stands out. But that is the reality of it, lets not throw away what we have learnt. Lets bottle it up and make sure it drives us on.
"The differences we are looking at next season are familiarity, the interdependencies that guys get when they play with each other for a long enough time that they develop an ESP. That is unquantifiable thing when building any team.
"We want a long period of stability at the club. After four or five years of a lot of transient people coming through for a season, you lose your identity.
"You have to have a no fools policy and we will spend the time making sure we get the right characters."
