Wallabies whine about set pieces
Thursday September 01 2005
Woodcock expects a scrumming backlash
While the Wallabies took time out to once again complain about the tactics of the opposition, All Black prop Tony Woodcock has warned that the Australians may actually provide some real resistance in the scrums when the two teams meet in the final Tri-Nations Test of the year in Auckland on Saturday.

Former Wallaby prop Andrew Blades accused the All Blacks and Springboks of being \"cynical\" in the set pieces and disrupting an Australian side reliant on set moves from scrums and line-outs.

But Woodcock says he expects an improved attitude from the Wallabies in the scrums on Saturday.

The Kiwis were totally dominant when the All Blacks and Wallabies met in Sydney last month, eventually winning 30-13 as the Australians failed to get establish any sort of platform in the set pieces.

And Woodcock, the All Black loosehead prop, has been a constant in a front row that clearly outpointed the Lions and have also had the edge on the Springboks and Wallabies in the Tri-Nations.

Sydney was the most lopsided scrummaging contest and Woodcock anticipated a Wallabies\' front row - comprising loosehead prop Bill Young hooker Brendan Cannon and tighthead Al Baxter - will have had their pride dented.

\"They\'ll be quite determined to turn it,\" Woodcock told the New Zealand Press Association (NZPA).

\"It often comes down to individual attitudes within a scrum. Knowing that they might have had a wee bit of a hard time the last time we played them will make them more committed to it I suppose.\"

The rapid progress of the North Harbour farmer, Woodcock, has been central to the All Blacks\' impressive scrum, but he turned the praise to scrummaging coach Mike Cron and the implementation of an eight-man attitude to the set piece.

After their dismantling of the vaunted French front row at Paris last November, the All Blacks arguably boast the world\'s premier scrum - but Woodcock wasn\'t convinced.

\"I don\'t know if that\'s the reputation we have but it is a goal we\'ve got within ourselves to be the best scrum and I think we\'re slowly getting there,\" he told NZPA.

However, the Australian camp suggested the fact that they are struggling in the set pieces had more to do with cynical act by the All Blacks and Boks, rather than any real superiority in the scrums and line-outs.

\"The other teams know that if Australia plays its moves and gains momentum, it\'s hard to stop,\" Blades told The Australian newspaper.

\"They are prepared to give away penalties and free-kicks at the set-pieces if it stops Australia getting into play.\"

Blades said proof that the Wallabies scrum was \"a target of negative tactics\" was underpinned by Tri-Nations statistics that showed there were three times the number of reset scrums when Australia played.

\"A lot of it would be on Australia\'s ball rather than the opposition ball,\" he told The Australian.

\"The line-out and scrums are a dogfight. It is making the Wallabies play ad hoc rugby rather than the structured rugby they try to play.\"

Blades said the All Blacks had introduced an emphasis on wheeling the scrum, but conceded there was much to admire about their aggressive approach.

\"In New Zealand they\'ve gone back to giving all eight men responsibility for the scrum. It is a good emphasis to have because if things are not going well, everyone shares the responsibility. In Australia one, two and three usually get the blame.\"
