Rugby's cash crisis
5:00AM Saturday October 27, 2007
By Steve Deane

Rugby continues to fall on hard times with the once dependable national championship cash cow having morphed into a financial black hole.

Attendances at matches nosedived this season and television viewers tuned out in their thousands.

Many of the drawcard end of season playoff matches were run at a loss, with one source close to Auckland rugby said the costs of operating a ground the size of Eden Park meant a crowd of 16,500 for the final against Wellington as an "unmitigated disaster".

Auckland chief executive Andy Dalton was more circumspect. "We haven't done the financial analysis of the final at this point but I am reasonably sure that it won't look too great."

Wellington chief executive Greg Peters was equally underwhelmed. Wellington were entitled to 15 per cent of gross gate up to a maximum of $100,000, Peters said.

"We wouldn't be expecting to get 100 grand. For the premier competition in New Zealand, a gate of 16,000 is woeful. It's not Auckland's fault, Canterbury had 7500 for our semifinal last week.

"If the game had been in Wellington I would have backed us to get over 20,000, but not sell it out, which is what this competition should do."

Smaller unions such as Southland and Bay of Plenty have questioned the financial viability of the championship, but even the country's biggest unions are now feeling the pinch.

Dalton declined to say whether Auckland had lost money this season.

"I'm not in a position to go through that at this point," he said. "But it would interesting to see the finances of all of the unions. Crowds are generally down. There is not the same interest. The competition has been diluted and I think there are a large number of unions really struggling. Our results are certainly forecast to be well down on previous years."

Canterbury chief executive Hamish Riach said the province's crowds had been well down on expectations.

"The biggest concern to us was the way the competition finished," Riach said. "We had 22,000 for the Shield challenge against Auckland but when you have 8000 for a home semi against Wellington, we lost money on that game."

The dismal crowd for the Eden Park final was also an indication the competition was failing, he said.

"Auckland deserved lots of pats on the backs this year. They went through unbeaten and played bloody good footy all year and it didn't capture the imagination."

There have been exceptions to the rule with Hawkes Bay and Manawatu attracting good crowds but the Weekend Herald understands Bay of Plenty recently sent letters to creditors saying it could not pay bills on time. "If it was a normal business, you'd shoot professional rugby at this level dead in the water," outgoing Bay of Plenty chief executive Paul Abbot told the Bay of Plenty Times this week.

The fallout from the failing competition has been widespread. Official NZRU documents obtained by the Weekend Herald show Southland has posted significant operating losses in each of the past three years.

In 2004 and 2005, those losses were close to $500,000, while in 2006 that figure was closer to $300,000. Southland's net asset position had dropped over that period from more than $1 million to less than $500,000.

Southland is believed to be conducting a review to see if there is enough community support to continue in the competition.

Otago and Taranaki lost money in each of the past two seasons. Otago's net wealth dipped by more than $1 million during the new competition's first year, while Northland's balance sheet dipped by 25 per cent to about $1.5 million.

Other documents showed the average player wage bill of the first division unions rose from $1.213 million in 2005 to $1.313 million last season. Additional costs associated with the competition were also up, from an average of $652,000 in 2005 to $714,000 last year.

Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury increased their bottom lines last year but Peters doubts whether that growth will continue. "We'll be in the black this year but how long that will last for I am uncertain at this stage."

Auckland accepts two Ranfurly Shield challenges
06/12/2007 from allblacks.com

Auckland Rugby has announced plans to take the Ranfurly Shield on the road in 2008 after accepting two challenges from Poverty Bay and North Otago.

"We were keen to get the Ranfurly Shield into heartland New Zealand and the opportunity to play both Poverty Bay and North Otago prior to the Air New Zealand Cup next year is an excellent result," says Auckland coach, Pat Lam.

Both North Otago (2007 winners of the Meads Cup) and Poverty Bay (2007 winners of the Lochore Cup) requested a challenge and are delighted at the prospect of bringing the Ranfurly Shield into their province, with the first match taking place on July 15 in Poverty Bay.

“The prospect of having a Ranfurly Shield Challenge in Gisborne against the Air NZ Cup winners Auckland is mouth watering to say the least. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our players and I’m sure the Gisborne public will make this an unforgettable experience for the Auckland players and management,“ says Poverty Bay CEO, Neil Alton.

While not obligated to take on Ranfurly Shield challenges outside of the Air New Zealand Cup, Auckland wanted to get on the road with the log of wood says Auckland Rugby CEO, Andy Dalton.

“We can play two challenges from affiliated unions not in the premier division. So we will play these two games in July next year, prior to the beginning of Air New Zealand Cup. The Ranfurly Shield is such an important part of New Zealand rugby tradition and I’m sure the matches will be well supported in both Poverty Bay and North Otago.”

Colin Jackson, CEO of North Otago has no doubt the shield challenge will draw a big North Otago crowd for the game on July 22.

“Everyone in North Otago is looking forward to entertaining the Auckland boys and it will be a great occasion for a small but very proud provincial union.”

Waikato name new-look NPC squad
10:50AM Tuesday July 22, 2008

Euro-flight, injuries, retirements and All Blacks duties have reshaped the Waikato rugby squad for this year's national championship.

Waikato coach Tony Hanks' 28-strong squad announced today includes 13 new players this season.

Last year's players now overseas are Steven Bates, Marty Holah, Byron Kelleher, Roy Kinikinilau and Tom Willis.

Jono Gibbes and Keith Robinson have retired and lock Mark Burman and halfback Brendon Leonard are some months away from seeing action after knee surgery.

All Blacks Mils Muliaina, Richard Kahui, Sione Lauaki, Sitiveni Sivivatu and Stephen Donald are expected to return late in the season, if they are healthy once their Tri-Nations commitments end on September 13.

The Air New Zealand Cup ends on October 25.

Hanks has called up nine new forwards - Hikairo Forbes (prop), Josh Hohneck (prop), Oli Avei (hooker), Romana Graham (lock), Kevin O'Neill (lock), Matt Blain (loose forward), Tom Harding (loose forward), Faifili Levave (loose forward), Jordon Smiler (loose forward).

The four new backs are Callum Bruce (first five-eighth), Trent Renata (first five-eighth/fullback), Tim Mikkelson (wing), and Henry Speight (wing).

Loose forward Liam Messam, who has played 50 games for the Mooloos, has been named captain.

"Liam personifies what we all about in the Waikato," Hanks said.

"He is committed, loyal and driven to be successful. Liam will do a great job and he will be well supported by senior players such as pre-season captains Toby Lynn and Sosene Anesi."

Hanks said the new signings would replace the experience lost to the side through retirement or to overseas clubs.

Bruce, O'Neill, Harding, Levave and Avei were in form and their experience leading into this campaign was extensive and solid.

Hanks is in his first season as coach, succeeding Warren Gatland who left to take charge of Wales last year.

Waikato will play Bay of Plenty on Thursday night in Hamilton in a pre-season match.

Their start their Cup campaign against Northland in Whangarei on July 31.

Seven new faces in Auckland squad
1:30PM Wednesday July 09, 2008

Blues-bound Auckland rugby coach Pat Lam today named new seven new faces in the squad tasked with defending the national provincial title and the Ranfurly Shield this season.

Lam, who will have five matches in charge before taking control of the Blues Super 14 franchise on September 1, has had to replace 15 players missing from the squad who ended last year's Air NZ Cup unbeaten - a whopping 619 games worth of experience, and nine All Blacks.

The forward pack features just one All Black, 2003 World Cup flanker Daniel Braid, who is currently training with the Tri-Nations squad in Dunedin.

Lam has ushered in a host of youngsters to the pack, including recent under-20 world championship-winning prop Paea Fa'anunu and flanker Peter Saili, and was confident an inexperienced unit would step up.

"I'm convinced we've got the talent in Auckland and this region but we lose experience and that's the challenge for us as coaches to get these guys as well equipped as possible," said Lam, who will be replaced by an as yet unnamed successor after the round five game against Waikato on August 30.

In the backs, former Southland representative Watisoni Lotawa and Auckland club player Jarek Goebel are the new faces.

The departure overseas of Isa Nacewa and Nick Evans, who signed for Auckland but never played for the province before signing for English club Harlequins, leaves Lachie Munro, 21, as the only specialist first five-eighth in the squad.

Auckland's season starts when they take the Ranfurly Shield to Gisborne for a defence against Poverty Bay next Tuesday.

Presumably, they will then take the trophy to Oamaru for a second non-championship defence against North Otago a week later.

The All Blacks contingent who have either retired or moved offshore include Steve Devine, Sam Tuitupou, Brad Mika, Angus Macdonald, Ali Williams, Derren Witcombe, Saimone Taumoepeau, Doug Howlett and Troy Flavell.

Meanwhile, injured prop Chris Heard and flanker Onosa'i Tololima-Auva'a are likely to be added to the 26-man squad once they recover.

Auckland:
Forwards: Nick White, Charlie Faumuina, Tevita Mailau, Paea Fa'anunu, Tom McCartney, Paulisa Manu, Jay Williams, Stanley Haukinima, Dean Budd, Kurtis Haiu, Anthony Elisala, Chris Lowery, Peter Saili, Daniel Braid.

Backs: Taniela Moa, Grayson Hart, Lachie Munro, Benson Stanley, Winston Stanley, Ben Atiga, Jarek Goebel, David Smith, Isaia Toeava, Chris Mahoney, Watisoni Lotawa, Mikaele Pesamino.

Ten New Faces in 2008 NPC Canterbury Squad
July 21, 2008

There are ten new faces in Canterbury's 2008 Air New Zealand Cup squad. Two of the debutants are brothers Adam and George Whitelock. Sons of former Junior All Black, Braedon Whitelock, Adam and George grew up in Fielding in the Manawatu before moving south to ply their trade. While Adam is new to the competition, George represented Otago during 2007's campaign before moving north to join the Crusaders and is now firmly with the 'Red & Blacks'. The Whitelocks are the first pair of brothers to play for Canterbury since Aaron and Nathan Mauger.

The 2008 squad also features a new captaincy combination in the form of Kieran Read (Captain) and Paul Williams (Vice Captain). Kieran Read was a stand out for the Crusaders in the recent 13th Crusade, and as such, has been given the responsibility of leading the province in 2008. Paul Williams (a member of last year's squad) has returned to Canterbury after a successful season with the Highlanders.
