Da Planet Rugby.....
E poi si dice che siamo solo noi utenti che criticano Mallett
Italy's eternal problem seems to be they just don't know how to win. They could have, should have, finished off Australia in November and let a much-needed win against Wales slip last week.
One can't help but feel that the lack of a killer instinct stems from above. It must be incredibly hard for the Azzurri to really believe they can win when their coach keeps on telling everyone the opposite.
To be fair to Nick Mallett, we don't know what is said in the change rooms, but his attitude in the press room certainly suggests he doesn't believe his side has what it takes to topple the big teams.
Realism is one thing, and while Mallett might be trying to protect his troops from becoming demoralised by constant disappointment, they're never going to win those close games if they don't honestly feel in their guts that they deserve to.
How can you expect a team to win at Twickenham when the attitude of the coach is 'we're going to lose anyway so we might as well experiment.' (see the Bergamasco at scrum-half fiasco).
