Queensland Reds backrower Jake Schatz will captain the Australian Under 20s side at the IRB Junior World Championship in Argentina in June, with Brumbies playmaker Matt Toomua named as his deputy.
Schatz and Toomua take on leadership roles after enjoying strong seasons with their respective Investec Bank Super 14 franchises.
The pair return to the Under 20s fold for a second year, keen to better Australia’s fourth-place finish in Japan in 2009 and put an end to New Zealand’s two-year reign as champions.
Coach David Nucifora’s 26-man squad will depart Sydney on Wednesday bound for Buenos Aires.
Australia will open their campaign with a pool match against Scotland in Santa Fe on Saturday 5 June before matches against Tonga in Parana (9 June) and South Africa in Santa Fe (13 June).
Should Australia progress through their pool matches they will play a semi-final on 17 June with the final scheduled for 21 June at Estadio El Coloso del Parque in Rosario.
