Numbers surge seven percent, says NZRU

The number of registered rugby players in New Zealand has increased by seven per cent this year, demonstrating the growing popularity of the game at all levels, the New Zealand Rugby Union announced on Thursday.
Registered players grew from 129,253 in 2004 to 137,960 in 2005, representing a seven per cent jump, the same as in 2004.
The news was welcomed by NZRU Chief Executive Chris Moller, who said the growth in the past two years is a direct result of the three-year Community Rugby Plan initiated in 2004, and increased efforts by those involved.
\"This is an outstanding achievement by administrators, coaches and officials at every level of the game and represents a significant boost to not only junior and community-level, but to underpinning the future performance of our national and professional teams.\"
One of the most significant increases in participation numbers is at Under 13 level, where the number of registered players is up by 10 per cent from 58,225 in 2004 to 64,146 in 2005.
In the 13–19 age group, a total of 33,834 males and females play the game, which is an increase of six per cent on the 2004 figure.
NZRU Provincial Union Relationship and Community Rugby Manager Brent Anderson said the increase in player numbers can be attributed to the success of the Community Rugby Plan and the support of the Provincial Unions in its implementation.
\"The fact that more young people are playing the game is testament to the outstanding support from our principal partner adidas and our Provincial Unions for the Community Rugby Plan. A strong player base bodes well for the future of our game at provincial and international level,\" he said.
Anderson said the attraction of rugby to players in the Under 13 age group is as a result of several successful programmes, including Rippa Rugby, the non contact game that was introduced into primary schools in 2004.
\"In addition, several other initiatives, including the rugby administrators in schools project, the junior development programme and a primary school administrator trial scheme have contributed to the increased player numbers. The challenge for us now will be to keep the young players involved in rugby for a long time,\" Anderson said.
Not only are player numbers up, but the number of coaches and referees has also increased. The total number of registered coaches now stands at 9,947, which is 10 per cent more than the 2004 figure, while 2,215 referees are registered, up eight per cent on 2004.
\"It is fantastic that we are getting more referees and coaches involved because they play an important part in the game,\" Anderson said.
