Smit hearing postponed; No op for Thion
John Smit, the South African captain, has been cited to appear before an IRB disciplinary committee for his action against Jérôme Thion, the French captain, who suffered a serious larynx injury.

Smit was cited by the Australian citing commissioner, Denis Wheelahan, for an incident in Saturday's match between South Africa and France, won 26-20 by France at Stade de France in Paris.

The incident occurred in the 13th minute of the match when Smit came charging round from the front of a line-out at Thion, the ball under his left arm. As he approached Thion, Smit raised his right arm, his forearm in front of his face. The forearm made contact with Thion's throat. Both players fell to the ground.

The touch judge reported the incident to the referee but neither official could identify the culprit.

Jean-Baptiste Elissalde goaled the ensuing penalty.

Thion played on but was clearly in distress and in the 24th minute he was replaced by Grégory Lamboley.

Thion was afterwards taken to Percy de Clamart Hospital for 48 hours' observation. Jo Maso, the manager of the French team, reported: "Jérôme Thion could not talk and had difficulty breathing."

France's captain was taken to hospital as a result and diagnosed as having a fractured larynx. No operation is necessary, but the French lock is likely to be out of action for at least six weeks.

The hearing was originally set down for Sunday afternoon in Paris, but has been postponed to 14.00 (13.00 GMT) on Tuesday.

The postponement was at the request of the South African team's management to have more time to prepare Smit's defence.

Recently the French captain Fabien Pelous was cited for the unlawful use of the elbow on Brendan Cannon of Australia and suspended for nine weeks.

The match marked Smit's 51th cap for South Africa - hardly a cause for celebration with defeat (26-20) and a citing."
