French coach threatens test ref
Controversial French coach Bernard Laporte threatened to blackball Australian test referee Stu Dickinson during an extraordinary meeting on the eve of last night's international against the All Blacks.

A belligerent Laporte tackled Dickinson - who refereed New Zealand's 43-11 win against France last weekend and was a touch judge last night - in the foyer of a Wellington hotel.

During the exchange, witnessed by Fairfax general manager of sport, Trevor McKewen, Laporte appeared to imply he could negatively influence Dickinson's future career -including World Cup match appointments in France this year.

"If you are appointed to any French games at the World Cup, the French team will not turn up," Laporte said.

Dickinson has refereed France five times and the French have lost all five games.

Using his laptop, Laporte confronted Dickinson with selected highlights from last week's match and said: "You do this tomorrow and you will be finished."

Laporte's bullying conduct appears to contravene the IRB's code of conduct forbidding anyone from abusing, threatening or intimidating referees and touch judges.

It is normal for coaches to meet with referees, but highly unusual for them to meet with touch judges.

McKewen, who witnessed at least 15 minutes of the "meeting", said Dickinson appeared taken aback at the intensity of Laporte's attack. The whistle-blower was repeatedly harangued by the French coach as they sat at a table in the foyer of the City Life Hotel where the referee was staying.

"You are not being fair and reasonable," Dickinson said as Laporte repeatedly tried to show him footage of alleged All Black infractions in the first test.

But Laporte would not let up.

"We have had enough of you," said the French coach. "All the time you do this to us."

Laporte repeatedly took Dickinson to task over certain decisions he made in the first test, contending the All Blacks were awarded two tries they should not have been and that illegalities were allowed at the breakdown.

At one point, an exasperated but calm Dickinson tried to reason with Laporte, saying: "What are you suggesting? Are you saying you expect me to penalise every player I see on that side?"

Paddy O'Brien, the New Zealander in charge of the International Rugby Board's referees, told the Sunday Star-Times he would expect a report from Dickinson if the Australian felt threatened of intimated by Laporte's behaviour.

The IRB's code of conduct is clear on the intimidation of officials. Regulation 20.1.10 says a person "shall not abuse, threaten or intimidate a referee, touch judge or other match official, whether on or off the field of play".

O'Brien said: "I'm surprised to hear this and disappointed if it's true, but I need to hear from Stuart himself.

"If the meeting was out of hand I will hear from Stuart Dickinson. If there was a breach or Stu felt intimidated, I expect to hear from him.

"We will not have coaches telling us who will referee games."

Dickinson is already appointed to some World Cup pool matches in France and O'Brien said appointments from the quarterfinals on would be "made on merit".

O'Brien said he would also expect a report from Laporte if he was unhappy with either of the referees for the test matches here.

Laporte is a controversial figure in world rugby and has been vocal about the All Blacks and their coach Graham Henry in the week between tests. Despite France's poor recent international record in key matches, Laporte has managed to hold on to his job and is said to enjoy a strong relationship with key French rugby officials involved at World Cup and IRB level.

Last night's game was controlled by South African Craig Joubert. Dickinson was not available for comment last night

allora sela mettiamo cosi ecco l'ultima intervista ad Anton Oliver (UN MODELLO DI COMPORTAMENTO)
New Zealand stalwart Anton Oliver underlined his status as one of rugby's true gentlemen by extending an olive branch to the beleaguered French tourists in the wake of Saturday's encounter in Wellington.

The veteran hooker said he felt compelled to apologise for the public mud-slinging that marred the two-Test series and sought out France's Thomas Castaignède for a quiet chat following New Zealand's 61-10 win at Westpac Stadium.

New Zealand coach Graham Henry had accused France of negativity in the first Test, insinuating that the tourists had feigned injury and deliberately collapse scrums.

Castaignède was one of several French players who repsponding by saying that Henry had shown a "lack of respect", and France coach Bernard Laporte also delivered some personal barbs the way of his All Blacks counterpart.

But Oliver was determined to reassert the true spirit of rugby on proceedings by expressing his regret to his former Barbarians colleague.

"I just apologised to him for some of the stuff that was said earlier in the week and hoped the goodwill of rugby could push past that," Oliver told the NZPA.

"It was just a bit of gamesmanship. I asked Thomas not to take any of it to heart as he had come out firing."

A unique aspect of last night's post-Test presentations was that both teams mingled together to be photographed with the Dave Gallaher Trophy.

It was prompted by Oliver who, after getting clearance from New Zealand captain Richie McCaw, motioned the opposition over.

"Even though we all wear logos and it's a lot of money and all the rest of it, we're still sports-people and there's got to be sportsmanship," said Oliver.

"If that goes then we're really in trouble."

Australian rugby referee Stuart Dickinson said he was ready to apologise to the French rugby team for some errors when coach Bernard Laporte verbally attacked him in public.

Dickinson is expected to file a report today to both the Australian Rugby Union and the International Rugby Board (IRB) regarding Friday's verbal stoush in a Wellington hotel.

Laporte allegedly threatened to have a negative influence on Dickinson's career.

Fairfax general manager of sport, Trevor McKewen, overheard the tense exchange between Dickinson and Laporte.

"If you are appointed to any French games at the World Cup, the French team will not turn up," Laporte was heard telling Dickinson.

IRB referees head Paddy O'Brien said there was no excuse for Laporte's behaviour if he had threatened Dickinson.

He said Dickinson was not at his best in the All Blacks' 42-11 first-test win over France, which had sparked Laporte's tirade on the eve of the second test.

Dickinson was a touch judge in the second test, won 61-10 by the All Blacks.

"It wasn't the usual Dickinson refereeing and he knows that," O'Brien said of the first test.

That did not give Laporte the right to abuse him.

Australian Rugby Union (ARU) referees' boss Peter Marshall said he spoke to Dickinson about the incident yesterday.

"I just want due process, not to create a storm," Marshall said.

"It's important not to get too carried away but let's not ignore it either."

Dickinson said Laporte's behaviour was unexpected but would not elaborate.

"It's the first time I've run across something like this," Dickinson told Fairfax media.

He said he had arranged to meet Laporte in the public foyer of a Wellington because he had heard Laporte was upset about his handling of the first test in Auckland.

He said he had reviewed the video of the game, spotted only minimal mistakes and was prepared to apologise to the French team for them.

"I was talking to Bernard and looking to apologise for some of my decisions," Dickinson said.

"I wanted to make clear that I made one or two errors and was ready to put my hand up. It was probably not the most favourable of discussions.

"Bernard became upset and, not wanting it to become a full-blown argument, I just thought 'let's just get through this' then I'd wait for things to calm down and for cool heads."

Using his laptop, Laporte confronted Dickinson with selected highlights of his performance from the first test and said: "You do this tomorrow and you will be finished."

Marshall said that was disappointing.

"There are more appropriate channels to go through if coaches feel they haven't been fairly treated," Marshall said.

Those reports go to the IRB for future referee selections for test matches."

O'Brien said he expected a report from Dickinson today.

IRB spokesman Greg Thomas said if Laporte was found to have breached the code of conduct then any disciplinary action against the coach would initially be in the hands of the French national union (FFR).

Thomas said if the FFR's response was not deemed sufficient then the IRB could impose further punishment.

Too late Dickinson.
