Falconed fullback sees funny side
Cory Jane has entered 'falcon' folklore.
More than 20,000 people have watched and some commented on the Hurricanes fullback's now infamous header against the Waratahs last Saturday night after it was posted on popular website youTube.
To the uninitiated a falcon is a carnivorous bird, but within the oval ball fraternity it is a humorous term used to describe when a ball hits a player in the head, usually from a kick.
Jane was flattened when a full- blooded punt from Waratahs first- five Kurtley Beale hit him the face in the Super 14 match in Sydney.
In the past five days the dramatic footage has gone global on the Internet and provided plenty of friendly banter in the Hurricanes camp.
"I haven't seen it on youTube, but I've got it on my ipod," Jane said yesterday.
"Apparently it was up there [on the Internet] about 40 minutes after the game and a mate sent it to me. I got heaps of texts saying, 'how's the nose?', that sort of stuff. It actually hit me in the mouth, but the swelling went down pretty quickly.
"The boys were laughing at me after the game, they were giving me heaps. It's a bit of fun."
But Jane admitted he wasn't smiling at the time.
"I wasn't knocked out, I just didn't know what hit me. I was going to charge him down, but I knew I wasn't going to get there so I sort of gave up and then boom – I thought I'd been hit by a brick wall."
Australian television commentator Phil Kearns dubbed it "the best falcon of the modern era" and it's sure to feature on rugby league's popular Footy Show.
The term was coined after presenter and former Aussie international Mario Fenech, whose nickname is 'The Maltese Falcon', was hit on the head during a match in the 1980s.
