Police probe 'serious allegation' against England players
7:34AM Wednesday June 18, 2008
Police are investigating a "serious allegation" against up to four England rugby players at the centre of an alleged incident in a private room at the Hilton Hotel following Saturday's game against the All Blacks.
Auckland City police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty told NZPA Auckland CIB were investigating an incident which allegedly happened in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Ms Hegarty would not comment on what the allegation was other than to say it was of a serious nature. She would not comment on whether the person who made the allegation was a female.
Hilton management had been spoken to by police, she said.
Ms Hegarty said no formal complaint had been made and unless someone was able to collaborate the allegation and back it up, it could "end up going nowhere".
The players at the centre of the allegations were with their team in Christchurch, while detectives worked on the case in Auckland, she said.
Hilton management would not comment when contacted by NZPA.

Woman tells of England players' hotel antics
5:00AM Thursday June 19, 2008
By Alanah May Eriksen
One of several women who went back to the Hilton Hotel with England rugby players on Saturday night says team members came into their rooms and pulled duvets off the sleeping women the next morning.
Police are investigating an allegation made against up to four members of the team but haven't revealed what it is, only saying it is of a serious nature.
The alleged incident happened in a private room at the Hilton on Auckland's waterfront on Sunday after Saturday's game against the All Blacks.
A woman, who identified herself as Angel Barbie, told the Herald she was at the Hilton on Saturday night with one of the players, whom she met at the Pony Club on Customs St where he had been drinking with team-mates and members of the All Blacks.
However, the 22-year-old knew nothing of the serious allegation.
About five members of the team brought women back to their hotel rooms, Angel Barbie said.
She said that on Sunday morning the women slept in while the team went to training. When they returned, she heard a commotion coming from the hall and about four players burst into the room she was sleeping in.
She claims one pulled off her duvet, exposing her half-dressed body, and ran down the hallway with it.
"I think they were just sort of playing silly buggers and going round to all the rooms and seeing which girls were where," she said.
"They'd had swimming and physio in the morning and found out who had scored, I guess you could say.
"There was knocking on the door ... They were very persistent, they were kidding, and out of nowhere they just pulled the blanket away."
Angel Barbie said Hilton housekeeping staff told the players off and the duvet was brought back. When she asked the players to leave the room they did so immediately.
She said the incident was clearly humorous but she could "see how someone may have felt a bit violated".
One of the players had walked his female friend out to a taxi in the morning and was caught by coaches waiting downstairs who told him off for bringing a girl back, Angel Barbie said.

Zara Phillips jets in for the rugby
By PHIL HAMILTON and ABBY GILLIES
The Press | Thursday, 19 June 2008
Princess Zara Phillips, the Queen's granddaughter, has jetted into New Zealand to support the England rugby team.
Phillips, whose boyfriend Mike Tindall plays centre for England, had lunch today at a restaurant on Christchurch's The Strip with a group of friends.
She told The Press she was in town for the rugby on Saturday night, but objected to being filmed or photographed while eating.
"Do you do this to normal people?'' she asked.
Back home in Britain the England team was on the front page of British tabloids today amid allegations of sexual misconduct after Saturday's test loss in Auckland.
Auckland police have confirmed that an investigation is under way into allegations against four players, but no formal complaint had been made.
The players have not been named.
The Sun tabloid reported today that a Kiwi beauty had accused two England rugby stars of rape after having sex with them willingly.
Citing sources within the England camp, The Sun said reported that the players insisted the woman "was totally up for it.”
They said the 18-year-old girl had been eager to have sex with one man in his Hilton Hotel suite.
And they claimed she did not object when his pal arrived from the next room to join in.
Two more England aces were quizzed after it was said they saw sex acts involving the girl.
The Sun reported an Englad rugby source as saying: "Two players admitted three-in-a-bed sex with the girl.
"She’d pursued them from the start and phoned the Hilton to find where they were drinking."
The players all claim the girl was calm and in good spirits when she left early on Sunday.
But hours later team chiefs had a call from police revealing a "serious allegation" of a sex attack had been made.

Police confirm rape allegation, England players uncooperative
Updated 11:21AM Friday June 20, 2008
Four England players have refused to speak to police about an alleged incident at the Hilton Hotel in Auckland in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police confirmed this morning for the first time that the allegations are that a woman was raped and/or sexually assaulted by four players.
Auckland police flew to Christchurch yesterday in the hope of speaking with the four players alleged to be involved.
No formal complaint has yet been made to police, but the allegation - that a woman was sexually assaulted or raped by four players - is being treated as serious.
It is understood the 18-year-old woman's boyfriend contacted police after she returned from Auckland's Hilton Hotel, where an assault allegedly took place following a post-match heavy drinking session in central Auckland on Saturday night.
Auckland City police communications manager Noreen Hegarty said the players had advised police via lawyers they declined to be interviewed at this stage.
Ms Hegarty said the investigation would continue as "thoroughly as possible" before police reviewed the file.
"Any decision about where to take matters from there will depend on the outcome of that review."
A formal complaint could be made at any time in the future.
The allegations have made headlines throughout British media, with concerns the sordid nature of the claims would ensure they overshadow anything that happens on the pitch during the team's two-match tour against the All Blacks.
A day after getting the full tabloid treatment in England's Sun newspaper, the more serious broadsheets the Times and the Daily Telegraph today both weighed in on the allegations.
The Daily Telegraph reported police were "increasingly frustrated" by what they saw as the England camp's hindering their access into the rape claims.
Officers had also hit back at perceived efforts to downplay the allegations.
The newspaper said the players were accompanied to the hotel by several young women, including the 18-year-old, who went back to the room of one of the players.
According to one report, she had consensual sex with the player before another squad member came in from an adjoining room.
Sources within English rugby have claimed the girl also had consensual sex with the second man, which was witnessed in part by two other players.
The teenager then returned home, where her boyfriend later contacted police and made an allegation of rape.
The men all maintain the sexual activity was consensual.
The newspaper said whatever the outcome of the inquiry, the sordid allegations marked a new low for English rugby.
It cited one police source as accusing the England management of "pushing agendas" by briefing newspapers that the sex was consensual even before detectives had a chance to speak to the players concerned.
"This is a very serious allegation indeed," the source said.
"Suffice to say that New Zealand police wouldn't be pursuing an inquiry of this kind if they did not believe that the alleged victims claims were sufficiently credible to require thorough investigation."
The Times said England had appointed one of New Zealand's leading barristers to defend the players should the alleged victim decide to make a formal complaint.

Model in English rugby romp reveals all
The Press | Friday, 20 June 2008
They may have lost on the pitch on Saturday, but at least one English rugby player performed like the Energizer bunny later that night, a British tabloid has reported.
The Sun has interviewed model Sophie Lewis, 22, known as Angel, who claimed the superfit player "went like an Energizer Bunny" for hours.
The unnamed player is said to be one of two England aces accused of later watching sex acts involving two teammates and an 18-year-old girl who works in a lapdancing bar.
Sophie – among a group of girls who went back to stars' rooms at The Hilton in Auckland last Saturday – was with pals in fancy dress at the raunchy Pony Club bar when the sporting idol chatted her up, The Sun reported.
She told a friend: "I think it was my Alice in Wonderland costume that caught his eye. He even called me Alice when we first met.
According to The Sun, the model said he "wasn't flash or arrogant.
"He's very handsome and was a smoothie, a real charmer. I went back to the Hilton with him and we ended up in his room at about 5am.
He was fantastic in bed – awesome and had amazing staying power. He kept going like the Energizer Bunny in the TV ads.
Witnesses have said that while some players hit the booze after England’s defeat by the All Blacks, Zara Phillips' boyfriend Mike Tindall, 29, stuck with soft drinks.
Backpacker Adam Hastings, 21, said: "Women were flinging themselves at the players but Mike wasn't having any of it."
