HAMILTON, New Zealand (AP)—
Italy ended its five-match rugby union tour of New Zealand on a losing note Saturday, beaten 23-3 by first division side Waikato in an ill-tempered match.
Both teams were reduced to 14 men for 10 minutes during the second half as referee Steve Walsh, responding to persistent outbreaks of fighting, sin-binned opposing hookers.

Italy was a player short for an additional 10 minutes after halftime when New Zealand-born flanker Aaron Persico was sent to the sin-bin for a professional foul.

The match was made costly as each team had a player taken by stretcher from the field. Italy lost fullback Massimo Ravazollo in the 60th minute while Waikato lost flyhalf David Hill, an All Black two seasons ago, to a knee injury after 10 minutes.

Saturday\'s loss left Italy, coached by former All Blacks John Kirwan and Leicester Rutledge, with a two-win, three-loss record on a five-match New Zealand tour, their final preparation for October\'s World Cup.

The tourists beat first division Taranaki 18-10 and second division Counties-Manukau 26-18 but lost to Southland 40-18, Bay of Plenty 33-30 and to Waikato.

Waikato was Italy\'s most formidable opponent and for most of Saturday\'s match the visitors demonstrated the improvement they have made on tour by matching Waikato in the forwards.

They held Waikato scoreless until a break by fullback Loki Crichton in first-half injury time set up a penalty opportunity which Crichton kicked for a 3-0 halftime lead.

Crichton went on to kick five goals from five attempts. He goaled again in the eighth and 15th minutes of the second half to give Waikato a 9-3 lead.

In the same period Italian flyhalf Ramiro Pez kicked a penalty for his team\'s only points. Pez goaled once from three attempts.

All Blacks inside center Keith Lowen gave Waikato a winning lead when he scored the first try of the match in the 23rd minute of the second half and Crichton converted.

David Johnston increased the margin with a try two minutes from fulltime when Pez skewed a kick infield and the Waikato wing opened up the defense for a try under the posts. Crichton again added the conversion.

Scores:

WAIKATO 23 (Keith Lowen, David Johnston tries; Loki Crichton 2 conversions, 3 penalties) def. ITALY 3 (Ramiro Pez penalty).
