Springboks: \"Exhausted Springboks Must Rest!\"

South AfricaLeading South African sports scientist Prof Tim Noakes said yesterday to The Business Day that he believed it was highly unlikely the Springbok rugby players would be able to hit peak form on the year-end Grand Slam tour!

\"The Springboks are exhausted and need rest,\" said Noakes. \"If they are not given adequate rest, they will suffer further injuries and will not be able to function properly on the tour. Rugby players can peak for eight to 16 weeks at most,\" Noakes said. \"And, therefore, they cannot be expected to play tough matches 18 or 19 weeks in a row, especially those players in high contact positions.\"

He said his main concern was because the players have been exposed to such an arduous schedule, it would take its toll on the them during the Super 12 and tri-nations competitions in 2005.

\"The Springboks can play 35 to 37 matches this year. But if they are not rested, next year will be disastrous,\" said Noakes.

The Western Province team boasting 11 Springboks have been out of sorts, this he attributes to severe fatigue.

Noakes reckons that the Springboks performed well in the tri-nations simply because they did not tour Europe last year and the last season had therefore ended fairly early.

This had given the top players a precious two month rest in which to recuperate and regenerate their bodies for the current 2004 season.

Noakes said he discussed the rest factor with Springbok coach Jake White yesterday and that White was also concerned, agreeing that rest was critical.

\"Jake\'s opinion is that if no measures are taken to resolve this problem, the team\'s chances will be affected severely next year. The training load has to gear down, especially after such rigorous competitions like the Super 12, tri-nations and the Currie Cup. Flogging the players now with extra training will just make matters worse,\" Noakes said.

He said the Sports Science Institute had worked with the Blue Bulls to improve their performance two years ago, and he had advised their coaches then to reduce training toward the end of the Currie Cup.

The Bulls seemed to benefit from this advice, winning the championship for the past two years and they are on course to clinch the trophy again this year.

The rest factor is also inextricably linked to the injury count, said Noakes and the numberof injuries to Springboks at the moment appear to bear him out.

Springbok captain John Smit, Werner Greeff, Gaffie du Toit, CJ van der Linde and Quinton Davids have all been recently side lined with injuries. So with the decision to extend the Super 12, play more Tri-Nations matches and honour lucrative contracts, many of our beloved Springboks could find themselves out of action in the very near future!!

buona giornata
10 partite all\'anno? nei campionati giovanili? Sei sicuro?
