Wayne Smith questions Bok tactics

Tuesday August 23 2005

\'They\'re pretty adept at taking support players\' lines\'

New Zealand assistant coach Wayne Smith has added some spice to Saturday\'s eagerly anticipated Tri-Nations clash between the All Blacks and South Africa by claiming that the Boks bent the law book during the encounter in South Africa.

Smith believes New Zealand\'s support-runners were \"taken out\" off the ball during the 22-16 defeat in Cape Town, pointing to the fact that the All Blacks made 18 line-breaks at Newlands but only manage to score one try.

\"They\'re pretty adept at taking support players\' lines, at blocking lines and stopping them getting to the ball,\" Smith told the NZPA.

\"Twice in Cape Town we had players running onto the ball get taken out before they received a pass - one of them was probably a try-scoring opportunity and it wasn\'t penalised.\"

Despite his views on South Africa\'s alleged blocking tactics, Smith lauded the Boks for their ability to absorb pressure and the tenacity of their defence-orientated game plan.

\"They scramble well, which is a reflection of their spirit and the attitude that\'s in their squad - they work hard for each other,\" he said.

\"They\'ve got a good system that creates space for you but they cover it pretty well.

\"If we can make as many line breaks as we did at Cape Town, and we work harder to get to the ball carrier and avoid being blocked out then we should convert a few more [into tries].\"

When asked whether the All Blacks intend to air their concerns with Saturday\'s referee, Joël Jutge of France, Smith said he had probably already done so by raising it with the media.

\'Brutal\' Boks to tackle the All Blacks

Thursday August 25 2005

White not in a rush to change his defence

If something ain\'t broken, then don\'t fix it. This maxim certainly rings true for Springbok coach Jake White, who feels that his team\'s defensive orientated game would be good enough to secure victory against the All Blacks in a decisive Tri-Nations Test in Dunedin on Saturday - even though the Kiwis would have had time to study it carefully.

White has expressed his desire for the South Africans to carry the ball more in hand, but there certainly won\'t be any dramatic shift away from the game plan that has won the Boks their first three matches in the 2005 Tri-Nations competition.

The Bok coach has made it clear that the conditions at Carisbrook - where an evening game is seldom conducive to free-flowing, open rugby - will more than likely suit the South Africans\' game plan of brutal defence and no frills attack.

It is the Boks\' sound defensive lines that have won them their first three outings in this year\'s Tri-Nations tournament - where they have conceded just three tries, one in each game.

The Springboks use an umbrella defensive line - popularly referred to as the \"rush\" defence because of the manner in which the outside backs rush up - that often result in tries from turnover ball for the Boks.

It worked perfectly against Australia last week when two knock-ons - one in each half - resulted in length of the field tries for wing Bryan Habana.

Against the All Blacks in Cape Town earlier this month, this \"rush defence\" also forced the Kiwis into a mistake – Jean de Villiers intercepted a stray pass from Byron Kelleher to score South Africa\'s only try in a 22-16 win.

As with most things the opposition have carefully analysed the Boks\' tactics, but nobody has yet come up with a plausible counter.

And with conditions expected to be slippery at Carisbrook, in Dunedin, on Saturday night, strong defence is almost certain to create the sort of turnovers the South Africans have feasted on.

\"It\'s going to be a bit slower,\" White said. \"Carisbrook at 7.30pm [19.30] has a lot of dew. It won\'t be as open and that\'s obviously the style we are going to play.\"

But White concedes that his team\'s tactics can do with some tweaking.

\"We need to be as ruthless with the ball in hand as we are without the ball,\" White said.

\"We are almost content waiting for the turnover.\"

White said the Springboks did have a good repertoire of attacking plays \"but we don\'t seem to have the same switched on approach that we have when we don\'t have the ball\".

\"It\'s something the team knows – if they want to improve as we go along, they have to be as focused with the ball as they are without the ball.\"

White also made it clear that his team selection - he included De Wet Barry at inside centre and moved Jean de Villiers to the wing - is not cast in stone.

\"This is the team [that will run on],\" White said. \"It could be necessary in the course of the match to change some players around, such as Jean possibly moving to inside centre, De Wet to outside centre and Jaque Fourie to right wing.

\"This will shake the All Blacks out of their comfort zone, because they would not know who would receive the ball. If it should go to Jean, they would wonder if he was going to play wide or keep it short.

\"This is what I enjoy about this team. There is nothing stopping me from moving the backs around, because everyone has played in all the positions and they interact well,\" White said.
